Calcium carbonate derived from oyster shells is a natural mineral compound that has many
uses in the pharmaceutical industry:
- Antacids: Used as an active ingredient in antacids to treat conditions
like acid indigestion, heartburn, and upset stomach. Oyster shell–based calcium
carbonate is preferred because it is highly pure and has a lower risk of contaminants.
- Calcium supplements: Used as a calcium supplement to treat conditions
like osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hypothyroidism, and more.
Calcium carbonate oyster shell is also valued for its high calcium content, bioavailability,
and environmentally friendly sourcing. It is practically insoluble in water and 95%
ethanol, but slightly soluble in water containing carbon dioxide or ammonium salts, and
soluble in dilute acids.
